Aquatic and Wetland Plants

From the deep, emerald lakes nestled within our century-old limestone quarry, to the cascading waterfalls, to the shallow, marshy edges of our conservation area, water sustains life throughout our sanctuary. Our diverse collection of aquatic and wetland plants helps filter the water, provide crucial habitat for our vibrant koi and native wildlife, and offer spectacular seasonal blooms.

Floating & Deep Water Plants

These are the iconic, highly photogenic species rooted at the bottom of the ponds with leaves and flowers that rest on or rise above the surface.

  • American White Waterlily (Nymphaea odorata): A Florida native that produces classic, fragrant white blooms resting on round, flat lily pads.

  • Sacred Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera): Stunning, massive pink or white flowers that rise several feet above the water’s surface, surrounded by huge, water-repellent leaves.

  • Spatterdock / Yellow Pond Lily (Nuphar advena): A resilient native featuring heart-shaped leaves and globe-like yellow flowers that peek just above the water level.

Submerged & Oxygenating Plants

While often hidden beneath the surface, these are the unsung heroes of our aquatic ecosystem, keeping the water clean and oxygenated for the fish and amphibians.

  • Eelgrass / Tape Grass (Vallisneria americana): A native, fully submerged plant with long, ribbon-like leaves that provides excellent cover for aquatic life.

  • Coontail (Ceratophyllum demersum): A free-floating submerged plant with feathery foliage that resembles a raccoon’s tail, naturally filtering the pond water.
